Join us for a unique two-day event that addresses the similarities and differences between traditional Norwegian and Scottish dress and textiles. A display of items and a day of talks and discussions will challenge themes such as heritage and history, craftsmanship, design and fashion, gender, sustainability, identity and migration.
Day 1 | Thursday, October 23rd
Exhibition, Display, & Analysis of Key Items
Open to all
2.00pm – 5.00pm | A small display of Norwegian and Scottish items of dress, plus the dress itself – with a particular focus on weaving and cloth, showcasing key items. Guests are invited to view items with analysis provided by Curators and Makers.
Provided by Norwegian Institute of Bunad and Folk Dress, and the Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy.

Day 2 | Friday, October 24th
Presentations and Panel Discussions
This is a ticketed event.
10.00am – 12.00pm | Presentations on Historic and Contemporary use of Dress in Scotland and in Norway – past and present. Featuring presentations from the Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy and the Norwegian Institute of Folk Costumes.
This will be followed by presentations on two recent exhibitions that looked at dress, weaving and cloth: Queer Folk Dress at the National Museum Norway and other venues and the Tartan Exhibition at the V&A Dundee. Featuring presentations from Randsfjord Museum Norway and the V&A Dundee.
1.00pm – 2.30pm | Panel discussion with Key Speakers, the Kiltmakers Academy and others.
