Custom Lane sits in a 19th-century stable block behind Custom House, on the Shore. The ground floor opens onto a café, gallery, event space, co-working and tattoo studio, all step-free.

Williams and Johnson café keeps its own hours.
Brown’s of Leith, at 4-6 The Shore, is open Thursday to Sunday, 8am to 10pm.

Access

The route from Commercial Street to the wharf passes through a stone archway. The surface is cobbled and uneven. A second drop-off is at Dock Place.

Main entrance has 1380mm clear width with both door leaves open, 890mm with one. Doors are not automatic. Staff will assist on request, or in advance on 0131 510 7571.
An accessible toilet is on the ground floor. Gender-neutral toilets throughout.

A safer space

Custom Lane is for everyone. Inclusive of gender, sexuality, age, race, ethnicity, culture, nationality, religion and belief, disability, political belief, marital, maternity and parental status, socioeconomic status and minority groups. Zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment, violence and abuse.

A member of staff is on duty at every event as the point of contact for access needs and welfare concerns. Names and pronouns are respected.

Programming aims to lower barriers for designers and makers who face them. Hirers are encouraged to work with Neuk Collective on neurodivergent-friendly events. Content warnings appear on sensitive material. Photography is disclosed in advance and opting out is always possible. Prayer, multi-faith and quiet space can be arranged through the Building Manager.

Bus and tram

Lothian Buses 16, 22, 35, 36, N16 and N22 stop on Commercial Street. The nearest tram stop is The Shore, around five minutes’ walk away.

On foot or by bike

Leith is walkable from the city centre. The Water of Leith Walkway, open to walkers and cyclists, begins 200 metres from the door.

By taxi

Drop-off and pick-up is on Commercial Street Bridge, right outside the main entrance.

Driving

Free on-street parking is available around the building. There are blue badge bays on the surrounding streets. If you need to use one of Custom Lane’s two adjacent parking spaces, call ahead on 0131 510 7571 and we’ll arrange it.
