Custom Lane is delighted to present Cara Guthrie's first solo show.

Production seeks to explore the often overlooked labour of care in raising infants. Many forms of care go unseen and unpaid. In this volume of work, ceramicist Cara Guthrie references the 1800 calculated average hours a mother or parent breast / chestfeeds their baby in the first year of their life in 1800 porcelain cups.

Are we only able to see, understand and value care when it is in an easily identifiable form that can be commodified?

All cups will be available for individual sale following the exhibition close. Net proceeds will go directly to Amma Birth Companions, a Glasgow-based charity.

Cara Guthrie is a Scottish studio potter with a degree in Human Geography. She apprenticed in rural Denmark in the studio of Kasper Wurtz, and then in the Lake District under William Plumptre, before setting up her own studio. She is now a mother to two young children. Her work seeks to raise questions about the society we live in and the environment we must protect.

Today, Cara is based in Dunkeld in Perthshire. Her work is represented by Bard. Her stockists include Elliotts, Inver, L’Enclume, Kol and Little Chartroom, and previously Kettle’s Yard and Toast.

Alice Meikle is a Scottish photographer and ECA graduate based in Glasgow. Her analogue photography explores Scottish identity through light, texture and meaningful collaboration with her subjects.
